Mission and Vision

The Foundation's mission and vision set out why the organisation exists and the long-term outcome it works towards.

Our mission

The mission of the Mediterranean Institute Of Marine Studies Foundation is to increase understanding of marine environments and to support a sustainable relationship between people and the sea. The Foundation works to study and document marine environments responsibly, to support marine education for learners of all ages, to encourage informed environmental awareness, and to share knowledge openly so that decisions affecting the marine environment can be made on the basis of evidence rather than assumption.

  • Advance understanding of marine ecosystems and coastal environments.
  • Support marine education and the training of educators.
  • Encourage responsible environmental awareness in daily life.
  • Promote knowledge sharing between communities and institutions.
  • Support sustainable use and stewardship of marine resources.
  • Encourage community participation in marine awareness.

Our vision

We work towards a Mediterranean in which communities understand the marine environment they depend on, and treat its protection as a normal part of public life. In that future, marine knowledge is not confined to specialists: it informs education, local decisions and everyday habits, so that marine ecosystems are passed on to future generations in a better condition than we found them.

How mission becomes practice

The mission is applied through the areas of work described elsewhere on this website: marine studies, marine education, environmental awareness, conservation, community engagement and knowledge sharing. Each area is described in terms of intent and method, and verified activity is published as it takes place.
